David has followed in the illustrious footsteps of his two brothers Richard (Lions-93) and Paul (Lions-97), by gaining representative honours for Ireland and the Lions (2001).
Despite touring New Zealand in 1997 with Ireland, David would have to wait for his first senior international cap, which finally came against Argentina in 2000.
A series of injuries saw David miss out on international duty until a series of excellent performances for Munster saw him return to the international stage for the 2005/6 season. He has been an ever present member of the starting XV since 2005.

A member of the 2009 Ireland Grand Slam team David also toured South Africa with the Lions in 2009 and continued his form into the 2010 Six Nations earning a man of the match award for his performance against Italy in the opening game.
