After impressive displays in the AIB League and with Ireland U19, Murphy who hails from Naas, was signed by Leicester Tigers in 1997 where he has gone on to win two Heineken Cups (2001 & 2002).
Murphy was called into the Irish senior squad for the summer tour in 2000 earning his first senior cap against the USA and scoring two trys on debut.
In 2003 he would suffer a horrendous broken leg in Irelands 2003 RWC warm-up game against Scotland at Murrayfield, meaning he missed Ireland’s 2003 World Cup campaign. However Geordan returned to test rugby with typical gusto against Italy the following year and scored a try in Irelands triple-crown victory over Scotland that year. Murphy offers options on the wing, at centre and possibly at outhalf, although he is most comfortable playing at fullback.
Geordan played 12 tests in 16 games for Ireland up to and including the historic Grand Slam win against Wales in 2009. However a combination of injury and the excellent form of Rob Kearney kept him out of the team until 2010. Murphy with just one club game under his belt in 2010, was recalled he earned his 64th cap against England in Twickenham during the 2010 Six Nations, and his performace saw him hold onto the Irish 15 jersey for the next test against Wales and he added a further 2 caps to his tally on the summer tour against New Zealand and Australia
