Hailing from Ballinasloe, John is a native of Connacht having come through the ranks of the youth structure in the province representing Ireland Youth, U19, U21 and A.
John captained his province throughout the 2009/10 season and lead them to the semi-finals of the Amlin Challenge Cup. His performances in the Challenge Cup saw him called into the Ireland squad for their 2010 summer tour to New Zealand and Australia. In the warmup game to that tour against the Barbarians in Thomond Park, John was the stand-out player and earned his place in the starting number 6 shirt against New Zealand in New Plymoth on 12th June 2010
