Rhys is a powerful back row forward with pace to burn. He is a product of the Leinster academy where he has flourished in recent years. Despite representing Wales (his country of birth) he and brother Ciaran both elected to play their rugby in Ireland where they both earned representative honours for Ireland U20s.

The son of former Welsh international and national coach Mike Ruddock, Rhys earned his first senior cap against Australia in the 2010 summer tour. Rhys was preparing to captain Ireland U20s agasint Argentina in the Junior World Championships when he got the call to head for Australia where he earned his first senior test cap
