An athletic second row, Ryan made his Ireland ’A’ bow in last year’s Churchill Cup tournament. A member of the IRFU’s High Performance Select Group, he quickly emerged as one of Ulster’s first choice locks despite the presence of internationals Justin Harrison and Carlo Del Fava in the squad. Caldwell, who played in two Under-21 World Championships, signed a new two-year deal with Ulster in January and ended the season with two tries in his last four games for the province.
Ryan was an instrumental part of the successful 2009 Summer tour to north America where he earned the first of his senior caps against Canada on 23rd May and the second cap against the USA on 31st May 2009
